Reduced Dynamics of Stochastically Perturbed Gradient Flows
We consider stochastically perturbed gradient flows in the limit when the amplitude of random fluctuations is small relative to the typical energy scale in the system, and the minima of the energy are not isolated but form submanifolds of the phase space. In this case the limiting dynamics may be described in terms of a diffusion process on these manifolds. We derive explicit equations for this...
متن کاملStochastically perturbed flows: Delayed and interrupted evolution
We present analytical expressions for the time-dependent and stationary probability distributions corresponding to a stochastically perturbed onedimensional flow with critical points, in two physically relevant situations: delayed evolution, in which the flow alternates with a quiescent state in which the variate remains frozen at its current value for random intervals of time; and interrupted ...
متن کاملEnergy Transport in Stochastically Perturbed Lattice Dynamics
We consider lattice dynamics with a small stochastic perturbation of order ε and prove that for a space-time scale of order ε the local spectral density (Wigner function) evolves according to a linear transport equation describing inelastic collisions. For an energy and momentum conserving chain the transport equation predicts a slow decay, as 1/ √ t, for the energy current correlation in equil...
متن کاملControlled Equilibrium Selection in Stochastically Perturbed Dynamics
We consider a dynamical system with finitely many equilibria and perturbed by small noise, in addition to being controlled by an ‘expensive’ control. The controlled process is optimal for an ergodic criterion with a running cost that consists of the sum of the control effort and a penalty function on the state space. We study the optimal stationary distribution of the controlled process as the ...
متن کاملEnstrophy Dynamics of Stochastically Forced Large-Scale Geophysical Flows
Enstrophy is an averagedmeasure of fluid vorticity. This quantity is particularly important in rotating geophysical flows. We investigate the dynamical evolution of enstrophy for large-scale quasi-geostrophic flows under random wind forcing. We obtain upper bounds on the enstrophy, as well as results establishing its Hölder continuity and describing the small-time asymptotics.
